Fidelity recently donated $50,000 to assist at-risk youth as part of the Lyford Cay Foundation’s FOCUS programme over a five year period. The programme, whose mission is to “assist underserved, academically motivated students, reach their full potential” launched in 2011. Its overall objective is to help students overcome academic obstacles and set them on a path to college and career success.

This came about it became apparent that students applying for the Lyford Cay Foundation’s scholarship programme from local public schools were largely underprepared for the transition to tertiary education. FOCUS seeks to change that through providing its participants with 45 days of programming each year. The programme also provides uniform T-shirts, meals, transportation and study materials. The weekend and summer sessions follow a project-based learning curriculum. This is to assist students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. FOCUS is facilitated by interns who are College of The Bahamas students.
The Programme currently recruits fourth grade students in the north-western public school district of New Providence and follows them through to college. These schools include: Albury Sayles Primary, Gambier Primary, Oakes Field Primary, Stephen Dillet Primary, T.G. Glover Primary and Woodcock Primary. Admission is facilitated through applications. Albury, Fidelity Group Chief of Compliance and Donations Committee Chair. “Lyford Cay Foundation’s FOCUS programme provides us the opportunity to positively impact the life of students in a way that could have a life-long effect. Often the difference between an average life and one that is career driven and successful is a tertiary education.
